Lecture – Shin Buddhism

Presentation by Prof. Nobuo Haneda

Director of the Maida Center of Buddhism in Berkeley, California.

Recorded in January, 2020.

In this lecture, I discuss an outline of Shin Buddhism, the teaching of Shinran Shonin (1173-1262). Shinran emphasizes the importance of the realization of the true self (that he calls “shinjin”)—the self that is one with the Buddha’s wisdom. He tells us that he experienced the awakening of the true self through his encountering with a living Buddhist tradition—through hearing the words of historical teachers such as Shakyamuni and his teacher Honen. I discuss the three spiritual stages through which Shinran was liberated into the world of the Buddha’s wisdom.
